ETHICAL LEADERSHIP

Written by Dr Jacqulene Anthony

The role of leaders has changed tremendously today. In the past decades, leaders were regarded as individuals imbued with extraordinary powers to influence and motivate individuals in an effort to drive execution of tasks. However, this scenario has changed today in view if continued civilization and democratization.

Leaders today are expected to demonstrate their ability to make ethical decisions whereby means echo more than ends. This means that it is more focused upon creating value to one’s life, while making a difference in the lives of others.

Ethical leadership constantly emphasizes on ideas, morals and values. A leader must remind him or herself to exercise transparency and fairness in his or her daily tasks while leading. This simply requires the incumbent leader to resolutely stand by values, while spreading and sharing it with others enthusiastically.

“Truth alone triumphs at the end”. Heralding good values and morals along the journey of life is sublime. Thus, it is not the accumulation of material wealth, but standing firm on principles, values and morals that matter for ethical leaders.

Every human being is born with a conscience that constantly reminds them on what is right and wrong. Hence it is important not to forget that development of ethics and morals is bound by context and culture, but at its core it is shaped by convictions and lasting values. Additionally, ethical leadership skills have the potential to inspire corporations to thrive in an ‘abyss’ of disruption, thus striving for organizational sustenance.

In pursuant of sustainable progress, leaders must first take the responsibility to be ethical in their conduct and practices while casting a positive influence on others to do the same. Hence, there is a dire need for ethical leadership worldwide.

Leaders are constantly watched and observed, especially when leaders begin to exhibit negative traits and transactions. A momentary display of negative conduct can override their positive characteristics and good deeds. Therefore, leaders must exercise caution at all times, by demonstrating a high degree of honesty, integrity and complete transparency in their daily actions so that they can function as role models to others.

As Potter Stewart says, Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do”.
